WHAT IS BODYWORK?

In Bodywork treatment, the chiropractor uses hands-on touch and physical active therapy to allow the baby’s soft tissues to release myofascial tension and reorganize. During an infant bodywork session the patient should not experience pain or discomfort. Generally, infants find physical touch pleasant and relaxing. At times, babies may cry due to stimulation during the treatment. Please do not feel concerned if the baby reacts to the new stimulation. If you are worried feel free to ask the doctor any questions during the treatment.

Typically, a Bodywork session will last approximately 30 minutes or less. A normal Bodywork treatment plan will be 1 to 4 visits before frenectomy surgery and possibly 1 to 4 visits after surgery.

Bodywork is performed by a professional healthcare worker such as an osteopath, chiropractor, occupational therapist and physical therapist who have been trained in craniosacral therapy that help infants develop without tension. These Bodywork administrators relieve tension in the infant’s body while strengthening and lengthening the muscles needed for breathing and breastfeeding. Bodywork assists in the development of neurological integration. This process is when the baby learns to control their body and movements with ease and without tension. During the birthing process whether it is natural, Caesarean or mechanical assisted births, neurological systems are decreased due to trauma. Bodywork can help redress this trauma giving the baby the natural stimuli they may have missed during the birthing process.

WHY THE NEED FOR BODYWORK?

As mentioned above, the birthing process is a traumatic event for the infant. Nowadays, many babies emerge into this world with unnatural assistance. With this type of assistance, the babies do not benefit from the natural process of childbirth which causes their autonomic system to turn on, therefore, they are birthed with extreme tension. This is commonly known as “armoring”. This can cause the newborn difficulty in breathing, breastfeeding and limited movement of the chest, upper back, neck and mouth.

Bodywork interprets armoring as an issue of tightness of certain muscles and body parts. With this issue, babies may be oversensitive to touch suggesting in a particular area (i.e., tongue tie and lip tie). Bodyworkers seek to locate the root areas of tension and gently stimulate these areas through touch, allowing the fascia and connective tissues to relax and dissipate to relieve the infant’s symptoms.

WHY IS BODYWORK IMPORTANT FOR TONGUE & LIP-TIED INFANTS?

In today’s society, babies currently spend a lot of time in one position in utero. Due to trauma during the birthing process, infants may be born with torticollis (asymmetrical tension of the head & neck). Torticollis can continue to affect the connective tissue in the newborn as well as the shape of the head and facial muscles after birth. As mentioned before, modern birthing practices can place strain, tension and torsions on infant’s bodies causing them potential issues in the start of their new life. Even after birth, parents unknowingly halt their children’s natural development with immobilization (i.e., car seats, swings, swaddling, bouncers and strollers, etc.).

These issues can easily be addressed by Bodywork, particularly tongue & lip-tied babies with breathing and feeding problems. Bodywork can help improve the negative effects that tongue & lip-tie present. Less tension in the mouth, neck and head can provide improved movement pre-surgery making surgery easier on the baby and further success with healing afterwards. Bodywork is most useful being performed before and after frenectomy surgery.
